August 2020 - We drove to The Resort at Massey’s Landing in Delaware after a very easy and scenic three-hour drive from Pennsylvania to arrive promptly for our 3 p.m. check-in. We were greeted by General Manager Abby Beard, and taken to the check-in window. The lady that checked us in was very friendly and explained all the papers we were asked to sign. She then went on to let us know that there were certain guidelines due to COVID-19. Massey’s Landing was following a few rules to make our visit safe and fun. We were asked to always wear our masks when inside any of the facilities and amenities offered, such as bathhouses, restaurants, gift shops, and check-in/out areas. We were told that masks were not necessary at outdoor activities, but that they were still recommended social distancing, small groups, and had some other restrictions.
We were handed the keys to our adorable cottage, a map of the resort, the menu for the tiki bar, and an itinerary for the weekend and sent to explore the resort.
We stayed in one of the beach cottages that overlooked the bay. It was perfect. There was a sun porch with a table, then a front door that led into a living room, dining room, kitchen combo. The cottage had two bedrooms, one with a bunk bed that was perfect for our two kids, ages 12 and 7, and a master with a queen-sized bed for my husband and me. The master also had a television on the wall, and there was plenty of storage in both rooms to hide our luggage! We unpacked and relaxed for a bit before our weekend began.
We had arrived just in time for Wizard Weekend and were so excited. We even had special Harry Potter masks made for some of the staff and ourselves! The first event of the weekend was the “Smore Social”, where the resort offered complimentary s'mores around the community fire ring. My children were so happy to get to have a special treat before dinner time.
After the s’mores social it was time to enjoy the “House Sort”, this was done for the kids to see which house the “Sorting Hat” would place them in for their weekend at Hogwarts. There was a fun wheel of sorting that each kid was given a chance to spin. My kids both ended up in Ravenclaw, which was perfect as that is the exact house their mother belongs to. As you can tell I am a huge Harry Potter fan, so this was a perfect weekend for us!
Later that night they were also showing Harry Potter & The Chamber of Secrets on a large blow-up screen at one end of the resort, but we had a long drive and were a bit tired ,so instead we drove our golf cart, which can be rented at an extra cost for the weekend, over to the bar by the bay called Paradise Landing. The menu had delicious options for dinner and adult beverages. The food was amazing, the service was friendly and very fast. They also offered a few fun drink specials that were Harry Potter-themed for the special weekend. The restaurant, although pretty much outdoors as the walls were pulled open to enjoy the breeze and bay, was still following strict masks on until seated rule to protect guests during the COVID-19 restrictions
After dinner, we headed to the playground by the pool and welcome center. The kids had a blast there enjoying some fun equipment we have never seen at our local parks where we are from in PA. The view of the Welcome Center at night time was breathtaking and the kids had a great time getting to know some of the people they may be running into during all the fun Harry Potter weekend that was about to ensue. We headed back to the cottage where the kids fell fast asleep and the husband and I enjoyed some quiet time on the screened-in porch. It was so relaxing.
The next morning began with a lovely cup of coffee by the bay and then we took a walk to the public beach that sits right next to Paradise Landing. It was a lovely relaxing lazy morning with the kids playing in the water with dad while mom soaked up some sun. We had a ton of fun waiting for the waves to come in after large boats would go through the bay causing a stir on the normally calm waters. My daughter even made friends with a horseshoe crab who she gently placed back in the water after finding him washed ashore.
We cleaned up after beach play and headed on over to the main building again for more Harry Potter fun. There was a scavenger hunt happening for the kids and they had an absolute blast pairing into their Harry Potter houses and running around the resort trying to find clues and prizes. Our son sat back and let LilyRey enjoy the fun. What a beautiful place to hang out for the afternoon and relax. I also took the opportunity to pick up some fun Massey’s Landing souvenirs. Really cool SiliPint shot glasses and pints!
We unfortunately missed out on Harry Potter wand-making time because we had signed up for pool time during that event. However, the staff at Massey’s Landing made sure to put aside two wand kits for our kids so they could make them back at the cottage later that night. I was very impressed by this, as it was well above and beyond our expectations.
Pool time was an absolute blast and the COVID-19 precautions were absolutely perfect. The night before pool day we had to sign up for a pool time slot. They were broken down into 90-minute swim sessions and left a 30-minute period between each swim time for cleaning precautions. They made sure to keep the pool at the restricted 35-percent occupancy and a lifeguard was on duty. The pool is absolutely amazing. There is a section to the left that is for kids and adults to splash and play, and although the tiki bar was not open due to COVID-19 it sits on a sectioned-off portion of the pool that is only for people 21 and older. You can actually sit in the pool and enjoy a cocktail while your kids are swimming and splashing on the kids’ side! I can not wait to come back once restrictions have lifted and enjoy the pool to its full intended purpose!
Later that afternoon was another Harry Potter event and the kids were able to make potions from a list they chose from on Friday night. It was a ton of fun and the kids love this part of the day. After that, we headed back over to Paradise Landing for another amazing dinner!
When dinner was over we took the golf cart over to the field where a quidditch match had been set up for our Harry Potter-loving kiddos to enjoy. It was a really fun game and was so creative and exciting to watch. The staff played along and made themselves the golden snitch when it was time to capture the snitch. Harry Potter fans you know what I’m saying … doesn’t this sound like a blast. When the match was over my little lady was even given the golden snitch to bring home with her!
We left the match and headed back to our cottage to enjoy the rest of our evening lounging and relaxing with the smell of fire pits, melting marshmallows, and kids laughing and playing at the playground around the corner! It was the most amazing weekend and we are so blessed to have enjoyed it as a family.
We can’t wait to come back and spend an entire week at this resort. In all honesty, we didn’t want to leave and have talked and joked numerous times about moving down there and living on the resort! Hahaha … no seriously we have! One of my favorite parts about this weekend was the feeling of family it gives off, our family bonded more with ourselves and each other than we could have ever done at home. This was our first vacation as a family of four, all of our other vacations have been to travel and see other family members that live out of state.
Thank you Massey’s Landing for giving us an opportunity to see what it was like to vacation as a family of four, something we didn’t realize we were missing. This vacation and this resort is going to become a yearly family tradition!
